1. Okupe’s N13m fine not justice — Sowore

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has said that the N13 million fine paid by Doyin Okupe, a former Special Adviser to ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan, in exchange for a two and a half year jail term is not justice.

Sowore said this during an interview on News Central’s Politics HQ, monitored by our correspondent on Thursday night.

The AAC presidential candidate said the N13 million fine vis a vis the N720 million Okupe was convicted for, did not substantiate the money laundered.

In a previous interview clip shown of Okupe and Sowore on Al Jazeera in 2013 where Okupe represented former president Jonathan, Sowore had accused him of corruption and money laundering, adding that Okupe was one of the people who “sold away Nigeria doing deals with military leaders.”

2. Property worth N130m destroyed in Abia tanker fire

A tanker bearing 33,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit aka fuel caught fire at Chab filling station opposite Star Paper Mill, Umuatako, Aba, in Abia State on Thursday, destroying property worth over N130 million.

A worker with Chab, who pleaded anonymity, said the fire outbreak began at about 12 noon and lasted till about 2 pm, before it was quenched by the Abia State Fire Service firemen from both Aba and Umuahia stations.

Chief Fire Officer of the Abia State Fire Service, Arua Nnanna, described the incident as avoidable.

He said that the service had warned fuel station owners to always discharge their products when the intensity of the sun’s heat was not high.

3. Rice importation: ‘Nigeria lost N1.5tn annually before 2015’

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has lauded the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) over his rice revolution scheme which saved the country’s annual rice importation which stood at N1.5 trillion before 2015.

He made the disclosure at the All Progressives Congress Kebbi South zonal rally held in Yauri, Yauri Local Government Area of the state.

The minister said, “Before President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in 2015, Nigeria was spending N1.5 trillion to import rice from Thailand and other countries annually, but the rice revolution introduced by the president put an end to that.

“Today, I am happy to inform you that Nigeria no longer import rice, instead, we export over 800 tonnes of rice annually. Of course, this is a great achievement.”

4. Police arrest suspect, recover 2 stolen vehicles, master key

The Police Command in Ekiti has arrested a suspect allegedly involved in the theft of a Toyota Corolla car at GRA Area in Ado-Ekiti.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti, the command’s spokesman, DSP Sunday Abutu, said that the suspect was arrested with the stolen vehicle at Yamoye, Kogi.

Abutu said that the police command received a distress call on Dec. 18 at 8.00 a.m. that the vehicle had been stolen where it was parked.

“Upon the receipt of the report, the Anti-Vehicle Theft Section (AVTS) of the State CID, Ekiti State Police Command, swung into action and traced the vehicle to Yamoye in Kogi state where the suspect was arrested with the stolen vehicle,” he said.

5. Buhari restates commitment to police, army welfare

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday restated his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force, saying it is necessary for effective policing by the force.

President Buhari stated this in Abuja, as he received the 2021 audited report and 2023 budget proposal of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

According to him, “this administration has made the welfare of police officers and men a priority and police reforms a sacred duty.

“I particularly note that accommodation for police officers and men is very critical and this administration has made the welfare of police officers and men, and indeed, the armed forces a top priority.”

6. EFCC, ICPC competent to investigate state govt accounts – Falana

Nigeria’s human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC are competent to investigate the account of state governments.

This is contrary to the opinions of another SAN, Olisa Agbakoba.

Falana made this known in a piece made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.

He stated, “My respected colleague and comrade in the human rights community, Olisa Agbakoba SAN has questioned the legal competence of the anti-graft agencies to investigate the finances of state governments. He feels so convinced about his position that he has announced his intention to approach the federal high court to secure a perpetual injunction restraining the EFCC from probing the accounts of state governments.

7. FIRS to be renamed Nigeria Revenue Service

The Federal Government is set to rename the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

It will be called the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).

The name change will depend on whether the proposed amendment to the Finance Act now before the National Assembly sails through.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said the chief executive would be referred to as “Commissioner-General” as against the title of “Chairman”.

8. Criminals won’t stop 2023 elections, says Fed Govt

Despite the increasing spate of attacks on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) facilities, the Federal Government on Thursday vowed that criminal elements will not stop the 2023 general elections.

The government promised to ensure free and fair elections.

Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Dingyadi, declared that no matter the level of attacks on INEC facilities and other criminal activities, elections will be conducted in all parts of the country.

Dingyadi made the declaration at the 15th Edition of President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration scorecard series (2015-2023).

9. CBN: Emefiele relying on voodoo economics, sack him – Buhari told

President Muhammadu Buhari has been asked to immediately sack the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele, for relying on voodoo economics.

Lately, Emefiele has been linked to fraud, diversion of government funds, and perpetuating unwholesome practices in Forex management in the country.

However, a pro-democracy group, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders in Nigeria, CACLN, said Emefiele must be removed from office.

CACLN made the call when they stormed the Presidential Villa to protest against Emefiele’s continuity as CBN governor.

10. Twitter to roll out feature for impression count – Elon Musk

Twitter CEO, Elon Musk has said the social media giant will roll out feature to allow users to see impressions their tweets make.

Musk disclosed this in a post via his Twitter handle on Thursday.

He said that over 90 per cent of Twitter users read but don’t tweet.

He wrote, “Twitter is rolling out View Count, so you can see how many times a tweet has been seen! This is normal for video.

“Shows how much more alive Twitter is than it may seem, as over 90% of Twitter users read, but don’t tweet, reply or like, as those are public actions.”
