1. FG targets 2023 to eradicate vaccine-derived poliovirus
The Federal Government on Thursday said it is determined to eradicate the Circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio Virus Type 2 in 2023.
The FG also said 96 per cent of the Local Government Areas in the country have achieved 100 per cent in the outbreak response against the Circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio Virus Type 2.
The Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Faisal Shuaib said this at the Northern Traditional Leaders’ Committee on Primary Health Care Development Delivery Review Meeting in Abuja.
The PUNCH reports that if a population is seriously under-immunised, there are enough susceptible children for the excreted vaccine-derived polioviruses to begin circulating in the community. If the vaccine-virus is able to circulate for a prolonged period uninterrupted, it can mutate and, for 12-18 months, reacquire neurovirulence. These viruses are called circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses.
2. Naira scarcity: TUC threatens legal action against FG
The Trade Union Congress on Thursday threatened to take “constitutional and legal ways” against the Federal Government following the ongoing naira scarcity and fuel price hike.
Speaking during a press conference in Abuja, the national president of the trade union, Festus Osifo, noted that many Nigerians are “on the brink of financial collapse” due to the policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
“The problem as you know is that Nigerians have been betrayed by the banking system which has been unable to pay them their money on demand.
“They have also been failed by the Federal Government which unilaterally decided to change the three highest denominations of the currency, fixed dates for the change, and is utterly incapable either to deliver on its promises or protect the populace from financial strangulation,” he said.
3. Naira scarcity: Youths begin 14-day nationwide protest Friday
Nigerian youths under the aegis of the National Youth Council of Nigeria on Thursday said they would organize a 14-day nationwide protest over the scarcity of fuel and Naira.
They, therefore, demanded the sack of the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele; Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva and Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited, Mele Kyari by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for gross incompetence.
Speaking at a press briefing addressed by its Vice President, Mukhtar Akoshile, on behalf of the President, Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sokubo, the NYCN said doing so would save the nation from further economic meltdown.
He lamented that the drivers of the nation’s economy have showcased a lack of technical know-how in handling the economy, adding that Nigeria is regrettably heading to economic doom if nothing is urgently done.

4. FG orders petrol stations to provide POS machines
The Federal Government Thursday directed all petrol stations to make point of sales, POS, machines available to consumers and also accept bank transfers.
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, in a statement in Abuja threatened sanction on marketers which fail to accept payments through POS and transfers.
The statement issued by its General Manager, Corporate Communications and Stakeholders Management, Kimchi Apollo said stations owners must accept free use of POS in their stations.
5. INEC meets VCs, gives 4 conditions for participation as collation officers
The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC on Thursday in Abuja met with the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Federal Universities ahead of their participation as Returning Officers for Governorship election and State Collation Officers for Presidential election.
At the meeting which held at the National Universities Commission NUC, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu noted that the commission requires 23, 258 personnel as collation and returning officers.
He also listed conditions precedent for participation as returning and collation officers.
“We will engage 23, 258 personnel as Collation and Returning Officers. It is for this reason that this meeting is crucial. We need the support of our universities to source the requisite number of suitably academic staff of impeccable integrity who must also understand that this is a call to national service.
6. 2023 is critical time for Nigerian youths – AY
Nollywood actor and comedian, Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY has said Nigerian youths will change the narrative of the leaders in government through their votes because 2023 is a critical time.
The entertainment artiste said the young generation has been deceived in the past that their votes were not important, but he affirmed that youths will troop out to vote massively in the general elections scheduled for February 25 and March 11.
AY made these assertions while speaking as a panelist at an event organised by the United States Consulate General themed ‘Youth Involvement in the Democratic Process’ held at the American Corner, Airport Road, Ikeja, Lagos on Thursday.

7. North will vote Tinubu massively, says Arewa group
The Arewa New Agenda (ANA) has assured the north will vote massively for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu come February 25.
The Convener and Leader of ANA, Senator Ahmad Abubakar MoAllahyidi, stated this while briefing reporters in Abuja on the political developments ahead of the general elections.
He disagreed with the insinuations that the north will not vote Tinubu despite supporting a northern candidate in 2015 and 2019.
“The north has never failed to keep to its promise; when the north makes a covenant, the north keeps to it,” he stated.
8. Ex-Govs call for calm over cash scarcity
The forum of former Governors has called for peace amidst the tension caused by fuel and new naira notes scarcities in the country.
The forum made the appeal in a statement jointly signed by the Patron and former Edo Governor Lucky Igbinedion and Chairman and former Niger Babangida Aliyu on Thursday in Abuja.
The forum noted that in spite of all the challenges facing the country, the survival of Nigeria should be at the back of the mind of leaders.
It urged leaders to put aside political differences for the peace and prosperity that the country deserved.

9. Vote, don’t fight – NANS begs youths
The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has appealed to students and youths in the country to show their anger through their votes on the days of elections, asking them to shun violent protests against the scarcity of new naira notes and fuel.
The student body charged Nigerian youths not to allow themselves to be used as tools by selfish politicians to disrupt the coming general elections.
The Ogun State chairman of NANS, Damilola Simeon, made the appeal at a press conference in Abeokuta, on Thursday.
Simeon appealed to the youths and Nigerians at large to be more patient with the Federal Government over the new naira policy and fuel scarcity.
10. 2023 elections: I don’t see victory for PDP — Fashola
The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, says he does not see victory for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming presidential elections.
Fashola, the Director, Election Planning and Monitoring of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, made the remark at the Formal Launching of Eko O Ni Baje 10,000 Foot Soldiers for Tinubu/Shettima and Sanwo-Olu/Hamzat on Thursday in Lagos.
He said that the main opposition party had been so divided to record electoral victory either in the state or at the centre in the February 25 and March 11 elections.
He said that if PDP failed to beat the APC in the 2019 elections when it was united with the current presidential candidates of NNPP and Labour Party in the party, it would be impossible for the party to beat APC in forthcoming elections.
