1. Police arrest 30 in Ogun over election violence
No fewer than 30 persons were arrested for allegedly engaging in electoral violence and vote buying during the March 18 governorship election in the Ogun State.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Frank Mba, disclosed this on Thursday.
Mba said this while speaking with journalists during a visit to the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abeokuta, the state capital.
He explained that the suspects were arrested in various parts of the state for unlawful possession of firearms, inducement and vote buying during the election, among other offences.
The CP also disclosed that police also recovered 12 firearms, including an English made beretta pistol, 25 live cartridges and eight expended cartridges.
2. Ogun SDP gov candidate rejects election result
The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in Ogun State, Anthony Ojeshina, has rejected the result of Saturday’s election, describing the outcome as ‘a rape of democracy’.
Ojeshina who stepped down for the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Oladipupo Adebutu, a few days to the election, said the facts on the ground were enough for the Independent National Electoral Commission to declare the election inconclusive.
The INEC returning officer for the governorship and state assembly election in the state, Prof. Kayode Adebowale had on Sunday, declared governor Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the election.
Adebowale said Abiodun polled a total of 276,298 votes, while Ladi Adebutu of the Peoples Democratic Party scored 262,383 and the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Biyi Otegbeye garnered 94,754 votes.
3. Cyclone Freddy raises cholera, malaria risks in worst-hit countries – WHO
The devastation by Tropical Cyclone Freddy is exposing major health risks in the hardest-hit southern Africa countries where emergency response efforts are being ramped up to provide relief to affected communities, the World Health Organisation said.
The World Health Organisation said more than 300 health facilities have been destroyed or flooded in Madagascar, Malawi and Mozambique following the devastation by Cyclone Freddy, leaving communities without adequate access to health services.
The cyclone’s devastation has raised public health risks including the increased spread of cholera, malaria, vaccine-preventable diseases, COVID-19, as well as malnutrition. Support for trauma and mental health are also critical.
Tropical Cyclone Freddy was an exceptionally long-lived, powerful, and deadly storm that traversed the southern Indian Ocean for more than five weeks in February and March 2023.

4. IWD 2023: Emefiele urges bridging digital gender gap
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has felicitated Nigerian women and called for more engaging conversations on how women can leverage technology and innovation to bridge the digital gender gap.
Mr. Emefiele, in his keynote address at the CBN IWD webinar to commemorate the International Women’s Day Celebration, yesterday, noted that digital financial services had become a critical dependency in the economy, providing vast opportunities to bridge the digital gender gap, drive financial inclusion and increase employment and economic opportunities for women.
He reiterated the CBN’s commitment to promoting gender equality and financial inclusion among women through such policies as the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund (MSMEDF), which dedicates 60 per cent of the funding under the scheme to women-owned enterprises, the Framework for Advancing Women’s Financial Inclusion in Nigeria, which seeks to address gender gaps in access to finance, targeted onboarding of women on its central bank digital currency, the e-Naira, amongst others.
5. Insurance records 36% premium growth
The nation’s insurance industry recorded a gross premium income of N726. 2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2022.
The National Insurance Commission (NICOM) disclosed this in its bulletin, yesterday.
According to the organisation, the gross premium income generated in the quarter under review represented a 36.3%, quarter- on- quarter and 17.8% year-on-year.
6. Doyin Okupe appeals money laundering conviction, N13m fine
The former director-general of the Peter Obi presidential campaign, Doyin Okupe has appealed his conviction by a Federal High Court, Abuja for money laundering.
In a notice of appeal filed on March 16, Okupe is praying the appellate court to set aside the December 19, 2022 judgment by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu.
Justice Ojukwu, in the judgment convicted Okupe on counts 34 to 59 which deal with breach of the Money Laundering Act, in which he was found to have received cash payments in excess of N5m, on each transaction, from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) under Col. Sambo Dasuki.
As it relates to counts 34 to 59, Justice Ojukwu held that the prosecution proved it’s case that Okupe committed an offence contrary Section 1(a) & (b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2009, which is punishable under Section 16(1)(d) & (16(2)(b) of the same Act.

7. 176,408 candidates for mock-UTME March 30 – JAMB
No fewer than 176,408 candidates will sit for the optional mock UTME on March 30, 2023, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said.
The Board directed the candidates who registered for the optional mock-UTME to proceed to print the notification slips for the examination.
The board explained that the notification slip contained the candidate’s registration number, venue, date and time of the examination.
According to JAMB, this would enable candidates to easily locate their centres before the examination.
8. Amaechi never made any comment on Tinubu’s qualification, says Rivers APC
The Rivers chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has clarified Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, never made comments on the qualifications of the President-elect, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu.
The party in a statement on Thursday by its Spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, described such comments attributed to the Rivers’ leader of the APC as demonic.
He insisted that at no time did Amaechi link the President-elect to drug trafficking saying that the fifth columnists were after the former governor.

9. Ramadan fasting: Curfew now starts from 10pm to 5am – Zamfara govt
Following the commencement of Ramadan fasting, the Zamfara State Government has reduced the curfew imposed on the state to start from 10pm to 5am
DAILY POST recalls that the state government imposed a curfew on the entire state following the destruction of property in the name of jubilation by agents and party members of the opposition PDP.
However, in a statement on Thursday, Ibrahim Magaji Dosar, Commissioner for Information, Zamfara State said the state government has deemed it necessary to adjust the time of the ongoing statewide curfew which was imposed by the government to curtail the spate of attacks on innocent people, looting and vandalisation of government and public assets and property in the name of jubilation for the success of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP at the just concluded Governorship election in the state.
“The curfew is now from 10 pm to5 am, effective from today Thursday, March 23rd, 2023. This is to enable people to attend to the required religious rites and obligations in the Holy Month of Ramadan,” the statement said.
10. Kaduna election: Governor-elect Sani to sue PDP despite victory
Kaduna State Governor-elect, Uba Sani is preparing to challenge certain results of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after the March 18 election.
Sani expressed surprise that the PDP won some local government areas with bogus figures, announcing readiness to approach the Election Petition Tribunal.
The Senator polled 730,002 votes to defeat Isa Ashiru of the PDP, who polled 719,196 votes, a difference of 10,806 votes.
