1. APC plots to shortchange Christians, ex-SGF Lawal alleges
Christian politicians in Northern Nigeria would remain steadfast in their stand for justice, equity and fair play in the 2023 political dispensation in the overall interest of the nation, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has said.
According to him, any nation or political dispensation built on injustice would crumble because justice and equity settle all other disputes.
Lawal in a statement he sent to The PUNCH in Abuja on Sunday titled, “Why we are doing what we are doing”, was pleading with Nigerians to understand the position of the Northern Christian politicians on the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 presidential election.
2. Police nab suspected Bayelsa kidnap kingpin
Detectives from the Bayelsa State Police Command have arrested a suspected kidnap kingpin identified as John Ewa, who had been on the wanted list of the police for various alleged abductions in the state.
It was learnt that the police operatives trailed Ewa, who goes by the alias ‘Lion’, to Abuja where they nabbed him on Saturday.
The suspect, who flaunts wealth on social media, is believed to be involved in several kidnap incidents around Yenagoa, the state capital.
In a six-second clip that trended on social media at the weekend, Ewa, dressed in his pyjamas, was seen displaying few notes of foreign currency saying, “Get money for this life, hustle, hustle.”
3. Team World win first Laver Cup title
Frances Tiafoe led Team World to their first Laver Cup title as the American saved four match points in a dramatic victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas that denied Roger Federer a farewell trophy on Sunday.
Tiafoe staged a superb fightback to win 1-6,7-6 (13/11), 10/8 in the penultimate match of the tournament at London’s O2 Arena.
That was enough to give John McEnroe’s Team World a 13-8 overall margin of victory with a match to spare, sealing their maiden triumph in the competition after Team Europe won the first four editions.
While Federer had hoped to mark the end of his career by lifting the trophy in a tournament he helped create, the Swiss legend was left to salute Tiafoe and the rest of the Team World squad.
“Congratulations to Team World, amazing comeback,” Federer said.

4. Sector reforms: Lagos boosts non-motorised transport infrastructure
The Lagos State Government has concluded plans to commence the construction of certain infrastructure aimed at ensuring seamless implementation of the Non-Motorized Transport Plan, NMT.
This came as the state government and stakeholders met to map out traffic management strategies in anticipation of the commencement of Lekki Deep Sea Port operations which will impact traffic flow along the Lekki/Epe corridor
Speaking at the State maiden edition of “Car Free Day,” on Sunday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, stated that in the construction of some of the terminals, bicycle parking has been included to encourage the citizenry to embrace NMT, adding that his administration is making tremendous efforts to make transportation in the state more effective, efficient and sustainable through its several infrastructural, policy, and institutional reforms to curb the looming dangers of the climate change.
5. I’m optimistic about Nigeria’s future, says Osinbajo
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) says he foresees a better future for Nigeria, as the nation prepares to celebrate its 62nd independence anniversary.
Osinbajo insisted that the country would not be destroyed by the myriads of challenges confronting it.
He spoke during the Independence Anniversary Service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja on Sunday with the theme: ‘Those Who Wait on the Lord Shall Inherit the Land’.
6. 7, including child, die as commercial bus catches fire in Lagos
Tragedy struck on Sunday afternoon, when a commercial bus suddenly burst into fire at Iyaana-Oworo, Gbagada area of Lagos State, killing at least seven passengers, including a child.
According to an eyewitness, the incident occurred at about 5, pm, as passersby rushed to put out the raging fire.
Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, confirmed the incident and casualties.
Oke-Osanyitolu said, “Upon arrival at the scene, a commercial bus of 14 passenger Mazda with registration number KJA 699 GY was discovered to have been gutted with fire.

7. MDCN tries seven doctors for alleged misconducts
The Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) will on Tuesday resume hearing of the reported and investigated cases of alleged professional misconducts involving seven doctors.
According to the case list from the MDCN, two doctors will be arraigned for judgements. They are: Dr. Roberts Osas Ikhu-Omoregbe and Dr. Abdul-Baki Abdulganiyu Ishola.
Three others Dr. Elias Agada Anyebe, Dr. Abdullahi Ominisi Jimoh, and Dr. Kudehinbu Olajide Bola are for hearing. One Dr. Anuoluwapo Olufunmilayo Adepoju is for defence. One Dr. Gerald Onwuegbuzie is for adoption of address.
The tribunal sitting is expected to take place between Tuesday, September 27, 2022 to Thursday from 10 am daily at the MDCN Head Office in Abuja.
8. Foundation trains 347 young entrepreneurs, offers grant
Three hundred and forty-seven young entrepreneurs have received training and certification.
Some of them received between $5,000 and lower start-up grants from Connak Foundation, a non-profit organization.
The grant followed an 11-week intensive online entrepreneurship training by the Foundation to mark its 10th year anniversary.

There are indications that the Lagos State Government may have concluded plans to construct bicycle parking terminals in the state.
The aim, according to the state government, is to encourage the Non-Motorized Transport Plan (NMT).
Recall that the state government has set aside a day to observe non-vehicular movement owing to the traffic gridlock usually experienced in the state.
A statement by Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlola, Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Transport, noted that the construction of terminals for bicycles would ensure the seamless implementation of NMT by the state government.
