Newspaper Headlines

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Major Newspapers in Nigeria

PUNCH NEWSPAPER

1. Blue-Line rail electrified, avoid tracks, Sanwo-Olu warns Lagosians

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has warned against crossing from, and to either sides the Blue Line Rail.

The governor warns that the new Blue Line rail is an electrified rail, and that it is necessary for Lagosians to keep off the tracks.

“The Blue Line rail is an electrified system, therefore, there is need for citizens to keep off the tracks.

2. Religious leaders back Obi’s presidential bid

Thousands of bishops, primates and Imams under the aegis of Inter-Faith Alliance on Saturday pledged their allegiance to the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who they said presented a balanced ticket.

The delegation of clerics, which turned up at the party’s secretariat included the General Overseer of World Harvest Ministry, Archbishop Leonard Kawaz, and an Imam from Gwarinpa Central Mosque, Sheikh Murtala Muhammed.

Kawaz, who is also prelate of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, told The PUNCH that they came to register their displeasure over plans of the ruling All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party to divide the country along ethno-religious lines.

The head of the Inter-Faith Alliance said this informed the decision to encourage their over 5,000 religious leaders, many of whom came from Kaduna, Kano, Nasarawa, Niger and Abuja to attend the event, to throw their weight behind Obi and his running mate, Datti Yusuf.

3. Gunmen kill two farmers in Nasarawa

Two Tiv farmers in Gidan Ityotyev, Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State were killed by gunmen suspected to be fulani herdsmen on Friday night.

This comes two weeks after herdsmen invaded Gidan Sule community in neighbouring Keana Local Government Area of the state and killed nine Tiv farmers, displacing thousands.

Spokesperson for Gidan Ityotyev community, Ukpuu Abaa, gave names of the farmers killed as Moses Saaku and Aondofa Saaku.

He added that the marauders chopped off the breast of one of the community female members, Kwaghdoo Saaku.

4. Only Atiku has plan to address perennial floods in Nigeria – Reno Omokri

Right now, Nigeria is facing a flooding emergency. 33 states are affected. 600 have died. 1 million are displaced. What Nigerians need right now are not photo opportunities by Presidential candidates. They need a permanent solution, so this does not reoccur.

It is said that the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour. Anambra state has perennially experienced flooding. The state government knows there will be a flood each year. Peter Obi was Anambra Governor for eight years. What infrastructure did he build in Anambra to contain flooding?

I can answer that question for free. He did nothing. No world standard drainage systems were built. Rivers and waterways were not dredged by the Obi administration. Rather, whatever efforts were made during Obi’s tenure were made by the Federal Government.

5. We’ve no reason not to deliver President in 2023 — Adamu

The National Chairman, All Progressive Congress, APC, Abdullahi Adamu on Saturday said the ruling party has no reason or excuses not to deliver the President and other positions in the forthcoming elections.

Adamu stated this when he accompanied the party’s Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to commission an edifice of the party’s Presidential/State campaign office along club road in Kano State.

The party Chairman said, “It is not over until it is over. We don’t contemplate. We have no option than victory and for victory to come our way we must work hard to earn it.

“No excuses, your party is the party in government and the opposition wins the election only when the party in government fails.

6. APC not party to support, they’re destroyers – Atiku tells Nigerians

Ahead of the 2023 general election, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) as destroyers, adding that they don’t deserve to be supported.

Atiku, who stated this while addressing party supporters in Benin, Edo State, Saturday during his party’s presidential rally, urged the people to continue to be loyal to the PDP.

He said the APC has destroyed the educational system, economy, and infrastructure and failed to address the security challenges facing the country.
