1. Balanced Islamic education necessary for peace — Buhari
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Wednesday, said “it is necessary” for the world to grasp a balanced understanding of Islam in a way that corrected misperceptions toward the millennia-old religion.
“It is necessary…to have a better understanding of the religion, away from its misconstrued teachings and perceptions as a way to achieving global peace, harmony and progress,” Buhari said after touring the International Fair and Museum of the Prophet’s Biography and Islamic Civilisation in Madinah, Saudi Arabia.
According to a statement signed by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the tour formed part of Buhari’s engagement in the Holy City as his official visit entered its second day.
In the statement titled ‘President Buhari makes case for futuristic, untainted global education on Islam,’ he said the spread of true knowledge of the religion of Islam was the most important task now facing global Muslims.
2. APC coalition writes Adamu, demands South-East Senate presidency
The Coalition of APC Support Groups on Wednesday wrote a formal letter to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, urging the ruling party to zone the Senate president’s office to South-East in the spirit of fairness.
In the letter signed by the CASG National Secretary, Mazi Peter Okoroafor, and made available to The PUNCH, the coalition expressed optimism that allocating the prestigious office to the region ahead of the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly would douse agitation and unrest among their people.
The coalition’s plea comes barely three days after the National Vice Chairman of the APC (North-West), Malam Salihu Lukman, called on northern senators contesting the post to step down to balance the Muslim-Muslim ticket approach of the party.
According to him, it would be insensitive to have a Muslim Senate president after producing a president and his deputy, who share a similar faith.
3. Bayelsa seeks partnership with Navy to tackle crude oil theft
The Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has urged the Nigerian Navy to collaborate with the state government in enhancing security on its waterways to curb oil theft and other criminal activities.
He stated this when participants of Course 7 of the Naval War College led by the Commandant, Rear Admiral Saheed Akinwande, paid him a courtesy visit in Government House, Yenagoa.
Commending the Federal Government on efforts to check the menace of oil theft, Diri stressed the need to ensure zero-tolerance for such activities, which he noted had adversely affected the state, the nation’s economy as well as the environment.

4. Brain drain: NASS bill not most effective intervention – Medical Association
Nigerian medical doctors operating abroad have said the National Assembly bill which intends to address brain drain in the country may not be the most effective intervention in revolving the situation.
The indigenous foreign based medical practitioners, operating under the aegis of Diaspora Medical Association,added that the measure was counterproductive and would not achieve its intended aim.
In an open letter,dated April 11, 2023 and tagged:”A Position Statement From Diaspora Medical Associations on Bill Seeking to Restrict Newly Qualified Medical Doctors and Destists from Leaving Nigeria “,addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the group observed that,”The major cause of brain drain include a poor care delivery framework from a failure to invest in the healthcare to foster a conducive environment.”
5. Anyawu emerges as PDP governorship candidate in Imo
The National Secretary of the PDP, Sen. Samuel Anyawu has emerged candidate of the party for the Nov. 11 governorship election in Imo.
Anyawu’s emergence followed the party’s primaries held at the PDP Secretariat on Wednesday in Owerri.
The Chairman of the Panel, Mr Kenneth Okon, said Anyawu, who was elected unopposed by the 915 delegates, polled 802 votes.
Okon, who said 853 delegates were accredited for the exercise, noted that 21 votes were invalid, seven delegates voted No, while 23 delegates abstained from the exercise.
6. Air strikes neutralize fleeing bandits in Birnin Gwari LGA — Kaduna govt
The Kaduna State Government says Nigerian Air Force strikes has neutralized fleeing bandits in Birnin Gawri Local Government Area of the state.
The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday in Kaduna.
Aruwan said at around 9:44am, the Ministry received a distress call of armed bandits attacking Sabon Layi village in Birnin Gwari LGA.
“It was confirmed that the bandits were shooting, rustling cattle, looting properties and committing other heinous crimes, a situation which had residents scampering for safety.”

7. LP crisis deepens as factions clash at headquarters
Some state chairmen of the Labour Party (LP) on Wednesday stopped the acting chairman of the party, Lamidi Apapa-led National Working Committee (NWC) from gaining access to the headquarters of the party in Abuja.
Last week, the Apapa – led NWC took over the affairs of the Labour Party
He told reporters he was acting on the judgement of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, which restrained Julius Abure from parading himself as the National Chairman of the party.
8. Gunmen abduct one in Osun Fulani settlement
About eight gunmen on Wednesday kidnapped one person at the settlement of Fulani herdsmen in Ila local government area of Osun State.
The Nation learnt the gunmen arrived at the settlement named Ago Igbira in the early hours of Wednesday and started shooting sporadically to create fear.
It was gathered that one of the residents Jubril was hit by a bullet stray during the operation. A source in the settlement confirmed the gunmen attempted to kidnap as many people but eventually left with one Mohammed to an unknown location.

9. Bill to block migration of health workers ill-conceived – Diasporan doctors
Nigerian doctors in Diaspora have reacted to the trending National Assembly’s bill seeking to curtail the brain drain in the country’s health sector.
DAILY POST had reported that the House of Representatives has started working on a bill sponsored by Ganiyu Johnson, seeking to amend the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria Act.
Accordingly, the bill would mandate Nigerian-trained medical and dental practitioners to practice for at least five years in Nigeria before being granted a full licence.
10. Schoolboy dies as flood wreaks havoc in Ogun
A secondary school student has died while an unspecified number of persons were reportedly swept away by flood following a downpour in Sagamu, Ogun State, on Tuesday.
Parts of Sagamu affected by flooding included Ajaka, Express Junction, Olayinka, Ogunyanwo and Isale-Ojumele.
The dead schoolboy, who was suspected to be a student of Agbele Community High School, was swept off his feet after he fell from a bike into the flood and drowned.
