1. Women celebrate 35% affirmative action ruling, make demands
Nigerian women on Wednesday celebrated one year anniversary of victory on 35 per cent affirmative action upheld by a court of law on April 6 2022.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Nigerian Women Trust Fund and eight co-plaintiffs.
According to the statement, the case was first heard on December 2, 2020, at the Federal High Court Abuja and 16 months after, on April 6, 2022, the hope of Nigerian women and the next generation of girls was reignited.
The landmark judgement upheld and mandated the implementation of the provisions of the National Gender Policy (2006) on 35 per cent affirmative action in appointive positions.
2. Afenifere carpets Lai Mohammed over election comments in US
The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has knocked the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, over his recent comments in the United States of America on the just-concluded general election.
This was contained in a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Chief Sola Ebiseni, on Wednesday in Akure, the Ondo State capital. The statement was titled, ‘Lai Mohammed on the 2023 elections and the burden of democracy’.
Ebiseni said contrary to what the minister claimed, the election was not free and fair.
3. I’m sad to leave Nigeria, outgoing British envoy tells Buhari
The outgoing British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, has said she is sad to leave the country having spent “a fabulous time” engaging with its music, dance and culture.
However, Laing said she will be back to the country after serving as Britain’s envoy to the country for four and half years.
“I’m sad to be leaving. Nigeria is so much fun, I had a fabulous time here, and I’ll be back. I love the dance, the music, the culture,” she told the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), during a farewell visit to him at the State House in Abuja, on Wednesday.

4. NDLEA declares Rivers prophetess wanted for recruiting girls into drug
A Port Harcourt based Prophetess, Faith Ugochi, has been declared wanted by the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for recruiting many young girls into drug trafficking.
The prophetess who is the General Overseer of Christ Power Adoration Ministry at Anozie Street,Mile 2 Diobu, Port Harcourt City was alleged to be introducing teenage girls into drug peddling.
Confirming the development in Port Harcourt yesterday, the spokesman of NDLEA in Rivers State, Emmanuel Ogbungbada said the woman was declared wanted for the reported matter.
5. FEC approves N392.786bn for Ministry of Works, Customs others
The Federal Executive Council, FEC, on Wednesday, approved a total of N392,785,113,356 contracts to ministries, parastatals and agencies.
This was disclosed to State House correspondents at the end of the weekly Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Among the memoranda that received approvals were two presented on behalf of the National Population Commission (NPC), totaling the sum of N15,300,000,000, for procurement and installation of technology-based gadgets for use in the upcoming 2023 National Population and Housing Census.
Briefing on the approvals for the NPC, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said while the first memorandum was worth N10.9 billion, the second one was valued at N4.4 billion.
6. Eze Ndigbo remanded for allegedly threatening to bring IPOB to Lagos
A Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, on Wednesday, remanded a leader of Igbo community in Lagos State, Eze Ndigbo Fredrick Nwajagu, for allegedlly threatening to bring the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to the state.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Peter Nwaka, ordered that the defendant, aged 67, should be kept at the Ikoyi custodial facility for 30 days.
He adjourned the case until May 3 for mention.
Nwajagu, whose house address was not provided, is charged with conspiracy and breach of public peace.

7. El-Rufai reinstates 1,266 teachers sacked over competency test
Kaduna Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has reinstated 1,266 primary school teachers sacked in June 2022 over a competency test organised by the State Government.
Kaduna Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB) announced this in a statement on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, Hauwa Mohammed.
Mohammed explained the teachers are to immediately collect their reinstatement letters from their respective Education Secretaries.
8. Ogun APC to Adebutu: don’t kill yourself over forlorn ambition
The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has advised the defeated governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Mr. Oladipupo Adebutu not to kill himself over what it called his forlorn governorship ambition.
Reacting to reports which quoted Adebutu as saying he might be killed over the outcome of the governorship election held on the 18th of March 2023 and his challenge of same, the APC, in a statement in Abeokuta on Tuesdday by its Publicity Secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, said: “We read with shock the alarm raised by Mr. Adebutu that he might be killed over the outcome of the governorship election and his quest to challenge same at the tribunal.”
“As a progressive party and government, we pride ourselves as people who are irrevocably committed to the plurality of opinions, the freedom of choice and association which our constitution and democracy provide.

9. Ekiti: Oral evidence needed to resolve Speaker’s impeachment suit – Court
An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti, has ruled that an oral evidence would be needed to resolve the suit filed against the election of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olubunmi Adelugba, by his predecessor, Gboyega Aribisogan.
Defendants in the suit are the Ekiti State House of Assembly (1st), the Clerk, Ekiti State House of Assembly (2nd) and the incumbent Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adelugba (3rd).
Aribisogan filed the suit to challenge his impeachment on 21st November last year at a plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Hakeem Jamiu during which Rt. Hon. Adelugba was elected as the Speaker becoming the first woman to occupy the position in Ekiti State.
10. Boko Haram: Landmines kill 755 civilians, injure 1,321 in six years – UNMAS
The United Nations Mine Action Services (UNMAS) in collaboration with Centre for Social Cohesion Peace and Empowerment (CENSCOPE), other partners said a total of 755 people have been killed by landmine, while advocating for the federal governments to expedite action to establish the centre for Mine Action to enable the body to coordinates its activities in the country.
The National Coordinator National Humanitarian Mine Action Committee, Group Captain Sadeeq Garba Shehu (rtd) stated this during this year’s commemoration of International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance for Mine Action with the theme: ‘Mine Action Cannot Wait’ held in Maiduguri.
He said insecurity in the North East, although greatly reduced, still remains a big challenge to returning populations as it limits access to arable land for agricultural production.
