1. Extend PVC collection deadline for Lagosians, CSOs tell INEC
Some Civic Society Organisations on Wednesday wrote to the Independent National Electoral Commission, asking the electoral body to extend the deadline for the collection of Permanent Voter Cards for Lagos residents.
The PUNCH reports that INEC stopped PVC distribution and collection on Sunday, February 5, 2023 as Nigeria heads towards the general election scheduled for February 25 and the March 11 gubernatorial elections.
But the CSOs — CivicHive, ConnectHub, Enough is Enough Nigeria, #FixPolitics, Community Life Project and Women Advocates and Research Development Centre — citing Section 16(1) of the Electoral Act, says INEC “owes ALL duly registered citizens who are in INEC’s Voters Register their PVCs so that they can vote.”
They added that eligible voters in Lagos are being denied the right to vote due to delays caused by INEC and its officials.
2. NCC issues cyberthreat alert to Samsung users, others
The Nigerian Communications Commission’s Computer Security Incident Response Team has urged Samsung users to update their Galaxy App Store following the discovery of multiple vulnerabilities in the Samsung Galaxy App Store Application.
According to the commission, this vulnerability can lead to unwanted app installations and code execution.
In an advisory, it said, “Meanwhile, NCC-CSIRT also advised users to update their Galaxy App Store following the discovery of multiple vulnerabilities in the Samsung Galaxy App Store Application can lead to unwanted app installations and code execution.
“It disclosed that Ken Gannon, a cybersecurity researcher from NCC Group, discovered the vulnerabilities in the Galaxy App Store application on Samsung devices that are running Android 12 and older.”
The advisory also warned against attackers using Microsoft OneNote attachments in phishing emails that infect victims with remote access malware, which may allow hackers to remotely access vital information on a victims’ devices.
3. FG approves construction of Oloibiri Oil for N117bn
The Federal Executive Council has on Wednesday approved a sum of N117 billion contract for the construction of the Oloibiri Oil Museum and Research Center.
This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, at the Presidential Villa while speaking with journalists on the conclusion of the FEC meeting chaired by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd).
The minister said the contract was awarded to Julius Berger Plc, with a completion target of 30 months.

7. N805m fraud: EFCC arrests convicted Senator Nwaoboshi
Seven months after the Court of Appeal in Lagos sentenced him to seven years imprisonment for N805 million money laundering, the Senator representing Delta North, Peter Nwaoboshi, was Wednesday remanded in the Ikoyi Custodial Centre to commence his prison term.
Nwaoboshi, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been on the run since July 1, 2022.
The anti-graft agency’s Head, Media & Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement that the lawmaker was intercepted by EFCC operatives at a Hospital in Lagos on Monday, February 6.
The appellate court on July 1, 2022, sentenced Nwaoboshi to prison after it convicted him on a two-count charge of money laundering.
8. IGP sets up planning, evaluation team for polls
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alkali Usman, on Wednesday constituted an Election Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Team to ensure the effective deployment of operatives before, during and after the polls.
The team, according to the spokesman, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, would be headed by the Vice President, INTERPOL and Head of National Crime Bureau (NCB), AIG Garba Baba Umar, adding that it would comprise seasoned officers across the country with vast knowledge in election security management.
He said they would identify, analyze and mitigate threats as well as carry out on-the-spot assessment and appraisal of the security emplacements ahead of the 2023 general elections.

9. Police launch manhunt for abusers, sellers of new naira notes
The Nigerian Police Force has launched a manhunt to arrest and prosecute people abusing or selling the new naira notes.
This was contained in a press statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Police Command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam.
He said the state Commissioner of Police, Ekot Effiom, issued the warning following a meeting with commercial bank managers in Dutse, the state capital.
According to him: “The directives comply with those of the Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba on the Federal Government’s policy and drive to uphold the provisions of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, and dignify Nigeria’s currency.”
10. Immigration seizes 6,216 PVCs, national ID cards from migrants
The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, has seized a total of 6,216 national identity cards and voter cards from some migrants in 21 border states across the country.
The Controller General of Immigrations (CGI), Isa Jere, disclosed this on Wednesday at a retreat for top management staff of the Service, in Abuja.
Jere said that 3,823 national identity cards and 2,393 voter cards unlawfully possessed by migrants were confiscated.
The vital documents, according to him, were intercepted in Nasarawa, Kebbi, Sokoto, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Kogi, Yobe, Kwara, Taraba, Plateau, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Zamfara, Jigawa, Edo, Bauchi, Niger, and three other states.
