Mandilas Building Fire: Lagos Govt Gives 14-Day Ultimatum

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Government has given a 14-day ultimatum to owners of adjoining structures and shanties near the Mandilas building, destroyed by fire, to vacate or face sanctions.

This directive came during a joint visit by key government agencies including the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, LASBCA, and other relevant bodies.

Commissioner Olumide Oluyinka emphasized the city’s ranking as the 19th best to visit globally by Time Out, stressing the need to align with Lagos’ smart city status.

“Lagos has recorded accolades from far and near in the area of ease of doing business which was alluded to by a recent publication by Time Out as the 19th best city to visit in the world,” he said.

He reaffirmed zero tolerance for shanties, pledging to remove illegal attachments on Lagos Island.

“We maintain zero tolerance for shanties,” Oluyinka emphasized, “and assure that all illegal attachments to buildings on Lagos Island will be removed upon the expiration of the ultimatum given.”

Oluyinka noted that the ultimatum aims to enhance safety and compliance with building regulations, and urged community leaders’ cooperation to ensure compliance, emphasizing sustained enforcement for a saner Lagos Island.

“This joint enforcement exercise is in line with the THEMES Plus agenda of the present administration to promote and enhance the quality of life for the residents and ensure that the lives and properties of Lagosians are adequately protected.”

She emphasized the government’s stance against unauthorized structures and sales on walkways.

She urged community groups and political parties to cooperate in maintaining order among shop owners and market traders.

Additionally, she mentioned the recent fire incident at the Mandilas building, attributing difficulties in firefighting to blocked access roads caused by illegal constructions.

Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), has ordered the immediate demolition of illegal structures surrounding the Mandilas 10-storey building.

He said that the 14-day ultimatum, effective from January 29, 2024, demands voluntary removal by property owners failing which the government will enforce removal and possibly pursue legal action.

Oki emphasized the removal of high-capacity generators from elevated floors, underscoring the need for public safety.

He insisted that generators placed on any floor other than the ground must be removed promptly to mitigate safety risks.
