“We believe multiple shooters fired several rounds at a crowd in the Five Points South district of Birmingham shortly after 11:00 p.m.,” police officer Truman Fitzgerald told local media.
Officers discovered two men and a woman unresponsive on the sidewalk, all suffering from gunshot wounds, Fitzgerald said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
A fourth victim later died at a hospital, he added.
EDITOR’S PICKS:
Dozens of others were wounded in the attack, with at least four sustaining life-threatening injuries, while the rest suffered “various injuries,” according to Fitzgerald.
No arrests have been made, and Fitzgerald urged the public to provide any information that might assist the investigation.
Several agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), are involved in the ongoing investigation.
Emergency services were on the scene Saturday night, with the area cordoned off for safety.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 403 mass shootings in the U.S. this year, defined as incidents involving four or more victims, either dead or injured. Firearm violence has claimed at least 12,416 lives across the country in 2023, the GVA reports.
