- The Nigerian military formation which consist of Army, Navy and Air force produced four female two star Generals
- Coincidentally, three out of the four Generals are Doctors.
- Listed below are four former female Nigerian Army Generals
1.) Major-General Aderonke Kale
She is a Psychiatrist of the Nigerian army. She was educated as a Medical doctor at University Of Ibadan. She then studied at university of London and specialized in Psychiatry.
After she returned from London in the 1971, she was commissioned into the Nigerian Army and later became the commanding officer of the Military Hospital at Ibadan she held the post between 1980 and 1985.
In 1990, she was promoted to the rank of Colonel and Vice Commander of the Nigerian Army medical corps.
Later, General Aderonke was promoted to the rank of brigadier-general which made her to became the first female in West Africa to reach such military rank.
She was initially Chief Psychiatrist of the Nigerian Army and later promoted to serve as Director of the whole Nigeria army medical corps and later turned to Chief Medical officer until 1996. She retured from military service in the year 1997.
- Major-General Abimbola Olatilewa Amusu
She was commissioned into the Nigerian Army as a second Lieutenant in the year 1982. She was in charge as the Director and Chief Consultant Hematologist at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna between September and December 2014.
After this she became the Medical Corps Comand and She held the post till she retired in 2018.
- Rear Admiral Mercy Ekanem-Nesiama
She is a native of Cross River state and she is also a Medical Doctor. She graduated from University of Ilorin in the hear 1983 and got posted to Nigerian Navy Hospital and this gave her the opportunity to join the Nigerian Navy.
Rear Admiral Ekanem-Nesima became the second Vice Admiral in the history of the Nigerian Navy.
She later became the fourth two star General in the history of the Nigerian military formation. After she had spent thirty-three years in service, she retired in the year 2018.
- Rear Admiral Itunu Hotonu
She studied Architecture at the University of Nigeria. She worked for two years at an Architect’s office. She applied to join the Navy and she was accepted as an officer candidate of the Nigerian Defence Academy.
She later became the first female to graduate as an overall best student of the Nigerian Defence Academy. Before her performance, she was commissioned fully as a directing officer of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College in Kaduna.
During the celebration of the Nigerian Navy 54th anniversary, Vice Admiral Itunu Hotonu was awarded as the Most Outstanding Performance. She got to the rank of Rear Admiral in the year 2012. This made her to became the first female Admiral in Africa.
