Members of the Nigerian Armed Forces retirees, under the Coalition of Military Pensioners, staged a protest on Thursday, effectively shutting down the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the protest stemmed from grievances over the non-payment of a 20% to 28% salary increment, which the government promised to pay from January to November 2024. The retirees expressed frustration over what they described as the government’s failure to honor its commitments to their welfare.

Key among the demands presented by the protesters were the payment of palliatives for the period spanning October 2023 to November 2024, the disbursement of a N32,000 increment added to their pensions, and the lump sum payment of the Security Debarment Allowance (SDA). Additionally, the group sought refunds for deductions made from the pensions of soldiers who were medically boarded.

The pensioners, many of whom had served in various capacities during their military careers, lamented that their plight reflected poorly on the government’s treatment of its veterans.

The protest highlighted growing concerns among retired military personnel about their entitlements and benefits, with many calling for swift action to address their demands and ensure better welfare for those who served the nation.

The Federal Ministry of Finance had not issued an official response as of the time of reporting, while the pensioners vowed to sustain their protest until their demands are met.
