Missing American Hiker Found Dead On South Africa’s Table Mountain
Brook Cheuvront, a 20-year-old student from North Carolina, had been in Cape Town for an internship with a non-governmental organization (NGO). She was reported missing on Saturday after the tracking app she used during a solo hike stopped updating, and her friends were unable to reach her.

Her body was discovered on Sunday near Devil’s Peak, a mountainous area close to Table Mountain, according to South African police.
The South African National Parks (SANParks), which oversees Table Mountain, said Cheuvront had set out for the hike at noon on Saturday. Concern grew when there were no updates from her tracking app, prompting her friends to contact the police.
Search teams, including rangers and wilderness rescue crews, began an extensive operation, which paused late Saturday night. The search resumed the next day with the aid of a helicopter, which ultimately located her body.

“The circumstances around the hiker’s death are still being investigated,” SANParks said in a statement.
In a Facebook post, Cheuvront’s father, Steve, expressed the family’s grief, saying, “God help me and us. We are devastated.”
Cheuvront was a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, pursuing her studies while interning in Cape Town.
Although South African authorities have refuted claims of increased crime in Table Mountain National Park, they advised hikers to avoid trekking alone.
