NANS Applauds EFCC for Recovery of Massive Estate from Corrupt Official

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for successfully recovering a massive estate in Abuja, previously owned by a former top government official accused of corruption.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the forfeited estate, located on Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, spans 150,500 square meters and features 753 duplexes and apartments.

The final forfeiture order was granted by Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie on Monday, December 2, 2024, marking it as one of the EFCC’s largest recoveries since its establishment in 2003.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by Abdul-Yekinn Odunayo, Clerk of the Senate at NANS headquarters, the students’ body hailed the recovery as a “monumental achievement” in the fight against corruption.

Odunayo praised EFCC Chairman Mr. Ola Olukoyede for his unwavering commitment to combating corruption in both the public and private sectors. He stressed that Nigeria would be a better place if corruption was tackled head-on, and described the forfeiture as a clear message to corrupt officials that their actions will no longer go unpunished.

NANS called on the EFCC to maintain its momentum and expand investigations into government ministries, parastatals, and agencies, referencing reports of similar illicitly acquired properties in Abuja and across the nation.

Odunayo also urged the EFCC to prioritize asset tracing and recovery efforts at the state level and to enhance vigilance within the agency to eliminate corrupt insiders who could undermine its integrity.

Acknowledging the resistance the EFCC might face from corrupt individuals, NANS urged the agency to remain resolute and determined in its mission. “The EFCC management must remain firm in exposing and prosecuting those who plunder public resources,” Odunayo stated.

NANS reaffirmed its support for the EFCC’s anti-corruption efforts and urged the Nigerian government to continue backing initiatives aimed at eliminating corruption, thereby ensuring better governance and accountability.
