The National Assembly has scheduled an emergency meeting for Thursday to resolve discrepancies between the Senate and House versions of the 2024 budget.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the National Assembly has scheduled an emergency meeting for Thursday to address and correct an error in the 2024 budget. According to The Sun, sources within the National Assembly bureaucracy confirmed that Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in collaboration with the Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, convened the meeting.
The primary agenda is to rectify discrepancies between the versions of the budget passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives. Sources disclosed that there is a slight difference in the budget approved by both chambers. The emergency session aims to harmonize the Senate’s version of the budget with that of the House of Representatives. Once the discrepancies are resolved, both chambers will pass the harmonized budget.
Many lawmakers are reportedly unhappy about being recalled just a week after the National Assembly went on recess.
They argue that the leadership could have waited for the originally scheduled resumption in September, especially since many of them have travelled to their constituencies or abroad.
Although the correction of the budget error is the primary agenda, there are indications that the planned nationwide protest might also come up for discussion during the plenary session.
This protest is scheduled to address the ongoing economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
