In a related development, retired civil war veteran Colonel Nasiru Salami expressed concerns about the inadequate treatment of retired personnel by the Nigerian Army’s leadership.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the 76-year-old veteran shared his thoughts as a guest on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief program, which aired earlier today in commemoration of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
Reflecting on his military career, Salami recounted enlisting in the Nigerian Army in October 1967 and being deployed to the battlefield for the Biafra war just six weeks after completing his training.
Now serving as Secretary of the Nigerian Legion’s Lagos Chapter, Salami revealed he spent 11 months on the front lines during the Nigerian Civil War, which spanned from 1967 to 1970.
He also shared the harrowing experience of losing his right foot during the conflict, an injury that required amputation. Despite this, he returned to active duty and continued fighting.
Commenting on the state of the Nigerian Army today, Salami declared, “At this moment, I cannot recommend that any of my children join the Nigerian Army.”
