According to a statement released by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi on Sunday, Simonpeter, a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli, Anambra State, recently returned from Thailand.
He was arrested by NDLEA operatives on October 7, 2024, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while attempting to bring the illicit drugs into the country. The heroin was hidden in six backpacks, which were placed in two large suitcases.

The statement explained that Simonpeter had left Thailand on October 3, traveling on a Qatar Airways flight, and had a two-day layover in Doha before arriving in Lagos. His luggage, however, had initially been routed to Accra, Ghana, his intended final destination.
After arriving in Lagos on October 5, Simonpeter requested the airline to reroute his luggage to Nigeria, hoping to retrieve the bags quickly and avoid detection. However, NDLEA officers apprehended him at the airport.
A search of his suitcases revealed that each contained three empty backpacks, with large parcels of heroin carefully sewn into the bags. The six recovered parcels had a combined weight of 13.30 kilograms.
Simonpeter reportedly admitted that he had been paid $7,000 to transport the drugs, with two parcels intended for Lagos and the other four for Accra.
