The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has approved loan applications for 3,283 students at the University of Ibadan, as confirmed by the university management in a circular issued on September 18, 2024.
While the loans have been approved, the disbursement of funds is still pending.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to an internal memorandum signed by the university’s Registrar, G. O. Salisu, department heads have been directed to allow students with approved loans to participate in the ongoing first-semester examinations, despite the pending funds.
The memo stated: “The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has provided a list of 3,283 students whose loan applications have been approved.
Although the funds have not yet been received by the university, the list has been sent to the departments, and all Heads of Departments have been instructed to allow these students to sit for the 2023/2024 first-semester examinations. This directive is for strict compliance by staff and students.”
This development follows a recent student protest at the University of Ibadan over a hike in tuition fees.
The protest was triggered by a circular from the university governing council, which approved a new fee schedule for both newly admitted and returning students.
The university had advised students to complete registration and payment processes before September 4, 2024, in preparation for the exams.
