She added that this year’s event focuses on meaningful and practical engagement with Nigerians in the diaspora.
“In 2024 alone, Nigerians in the diaspora sent home over $20 billion, more than the country’s foreign direct investment,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
“But beyond the numbers is a wealth of knowledge, skills, and global exposure that we must now channel into nation-building.”
She said this year’s theme, “Optimising Formidable Diaspora Potentials for National Development and Growth,” reflects the need for action, not just talk, in harnessing diaspora contributions.
The 2025 edition of the event is expected to welcome over 1,200 in-person participants and thousands of virtual attendees from across the globe.
Demonstrating growing international interest, a group of 25 African American visitors will also take part in the Abuja celebration, underscoring renewed ties between Nigeria and the broader African diaspora.

Dabiri-Erewa highlighted that NiDCOM has recently prioritized structured diaspora engagement through initiatives such as the appointment of Diaspora Focal Point Officers in various states, implementation of the National Diaspora Policy, the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit (NDIS), ongoing Diaspora Data Mapping, and continuous outreach efforts.
As part of the celebration, a Youth Empowerment Summit will be held with a focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) as a crucial engine for development. Students from 14 schools across Abuja are set to participate.
Mr. Abiodun Akanbi, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, confirmed that more than 500 young people are expected at the STEM summit, which is a key feature of the overall programme.
Other major highlights of the two-day hybrid event include plenary sessions, investment forums, and strategic networking opportunities.
The celebration will conclude with the National Diaspora Merit Awards, recognizing outstanding Nigerians making a global impact.
