In Nigeria, it’s not uncommon for people to graduate from university with a degree and end up working in an entirely different industry. This trend is evident in the entertainment industry, where many celebrities have made a name for themselves despite not practicing their course of study.
Tonto Dikeh, has to be one of the notable names, one that has grown as somewhat a controversial actress and politician from Rivers State, studied petrochemical engineering at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RUST). Despite her academic background, she has made a name for herself in Nollywood with outstanding performances in numerous movies.
Kizz Daniel, an award-winning singer, rose to fame in 2014 with his debut single, “Woju.” He studied Water Resources Management and Agrometeorology (Water Engineering) at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, graduating in 2013. Kizz Daniel signed a record deal with G-Worldwide Entertainment in 2013 but left the label following a publicized contract dispute and court case.
Banky W, an actor cum politician, began singing at a young age in his church choir. He studied Industrial Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York, on scholarship. While in college, Banky W started his record label, E.M.E, and won numerous musical competitions.
Etinosa Idemudia, an actress, and social brand influencer, is best known for her role as Akugbe in the ROK original series, “Blood of Enogie,” for which she won the award for Best Actress in a TV Series at the Hollywood and African Prestigious Awards. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from Covenant University in 2011 and also studied at Royal Arts Academy, where she obtained a Diploma in Performing Arts in 2016.
Nkem Owoh, with over two decades in Nollywood, is still a household name among many movie lovers. He attended the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, and studied engineering.
Okey Bakassi, an Imo-born standup comedian cum actor, has won numerous awards in the entertainment industry. He also obtained a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1992 at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology.
