House of Representatives member, Ben Ibakpa, has accused officials representing the Nigerian government of putting pen to paper on loan documents from China despite their inability to decipher the language the loan terms are written in.
Ibakpa said Nigeria dealings with China when it comes to loan are shrouded in secrecy as the house of representatives is not carried along.
Ibakpa, who represents Ethiope Federal Constituency in Delta State, levelled the accusation when he appeared on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Thursday.
He added that the bureau of public procurement is also left in the lurch regarding the loans.
The Delta-born politician said, “The national assembly was kept in the dark in all these loans.
“The National Assembly is not part of it. Even the Bureau for Public Procurement is not aware of these loans.
“These loans are collected via the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). They bring a bill, the Federal executive approves the bill.”

He claimed that, going by what members of the house have seen in other countries, the Chinese loans are overpriced, adding the Chinese are very corrupt.
Ibakpa pointed out that some Nigerian officials do not look into loan documents critically before signing, adding that “Some of these agreements that are signed, they come in Chinese language.”
