Olushola Sobowale netted a consolation goal for the Falconets late in the match, capitalizing on a well-placed cross from Goodness Osigwe.
Japan opened the scoring in the first half, a period with few clear chances, when Miyu Matsunaga converted Rihona Ujihara’s pass in the 33rd minute.
Nigeria’s fortunes didn’t improve in the second half as Japan continued to dominate possession and dictate the pace. Maya Hijjikati doubled Japan’s lead in the 63rd minute.
Despite Nigeria’s late push to equalize and force extra time, it was too late, and Japan held on to claim the victory.
