NiMet Cautions Residents in 19 States Over Rising Heat Levels

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a heat stress warning for residents in 19 states, the South-East, and coastal regions, citing rising temperatures and high humidity levels.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to NiMet, the most affected areas will include north-central and eastern states such as Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Other vulnerable regions include the South-West, coastal areas, as well as Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto.

The agency warned that the extreme heat, expected to persist over the next three to four days, could lead to thermal discomfort and health issues such as fatigue, irritability, decreased focus, impaired motor skills, and lower productivity.

NiMet advised residents to take necessary precautions, including staying cool with fans or air conditioning, wearing light and breathable clothing, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding exposure to the sun between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The agency also recommended using sun protection, such as hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen, to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
