- says the current minimum wage not sustainable in Lagos
The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Lagos State Government to increase the minimum wage for its workers to ₦150,000, citing rising living costs and recent wage adjustments in other states.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the chairperson of the Lagos NLC, Mrs Funmi Sesi, made the appeal on Thursday while reacting to the wage increases recently approved by the Imo and Ebonyi State Governments.

Sesi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the current ₦85,000 minimum wage in Lagos was no longer sustainable, given the state’s higher cost of living compared to other parts of the country.
“Accommodation, transportation, feeding, and utilities are more expensive in Lagos than elsewhere,” she said. “The time has come for an upward review of the minimum wage in Lagos.”

Sesi commended the wage adjustments in Imo and Ebonyi, describing them as a “welcome development” and urged other state governments to follow suit.
“At least someone has taken the bull by the horn and opened the space,” she said. “No one can fault Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu if he implements a higher wage for Lagos workers. We deserve better pay and decent working conditions in line with economic realities.”
She added that the NLC was eager to engage with the Lagos State Government to secure an improved welfare package for civil servants.
Meanwhile, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma recently approved a new minimum wage of ₦104,000 for state civil servants, up from ₦76,000. Similarly, the Ebonyi State Government raised its minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦90,000, according to the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe.
