The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has confirmed the arrest of its national president, Joe Ajaero, by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja on Monday.

The arrest took place at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport as Ajaero was preparing to travel to the United Kingdom for an official engagement with the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement released by the NLC on Monday afternoon, the union condemned the arrest, describing it as an attempt to silence Nigerian workers from advocating for their rights and holding the government accountable.

The NLC also disclosed that Ajaero has been detained at the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.

“The assault on Nigerian workers continues. The President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, was arrested and abducted by men of the DSS at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, this morning on his way to attend an official engagement of the TUC United Kingdom.
