The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has confirmed the arrest of its national president, Joe Ajaero, by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja on Monday.
The arrest took place at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport as Ajaero was preparing to travel to the United Kingdom for an official engagement with the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement released by the NLC on Monday afternoon, the union condemned the arrest, describing it as an attempt to silence Nigerian workers from advocating for their rights and holding the government accountable.
The NLC also disclosed that Ajaero has been detained at the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.
“The assault on Nigerian workers continues. The President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, was arrested and abducted by men of the DSS at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, this morning on his way to attend an official engagement of the TUC United Kingdom.
He is now detained at the office of the NSA,” read the brief statement shared on the NLC’s X (formerly Twitter) handle.
Ajaero’s arrest comes amidst previous allegations of terrorism against him, for which he had been invited by the Police for questioning.
This arrest has raised concerns about the government’s handling of rights groups and their leaders, with Amnesty International previously accusing the administration of President Bola Tinubu of suppressing human rights organizations and stifling dissent.
The incident has drawn significant attention, with labor unions and rights groups closely monitoring the situation.
