‘Irresponsible, Unhelpful’ – NLC Condemns Ebonyi Governor Over Threats To Sack Striking Workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru for threatening to dismiss workers striking over the non-implementation of the ₦70,000 national minimum wage.

Governor Nwifuru, speaking at the Government House in Abakaliki on Monday, warned that striking employees who fail to resume work risk being sacked, with their salaries withheld. He also claimed the state government had approved ₦75,000 as the minimum wage and begun payment.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in response, NLC President Joe Ajaero issued a statement labeling the governor’s remarks as “irresponsible and unhelpful.”

He urged workers to persist in their strike, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue rather than intimidation.

The statement read:
“We are dismayed by Governor Nwifuru’s threats to sack workers striking over the non-payment of the national minimum wage. This strike followed months of failed discussions and notices to the governor about implementing the 2024 minimum wage law, which has been in effect for several months.”

The NLC stressed that striking is a lawful tool for workers seeking justice and warned against the governor’s combative stance.
“A reasonable leader would have invited labor representatives for dialogue to resolve the issue.

Instead, Governor Nwifuru chooses to act like a dictator, disregarding his obligation to comply with the law,” the statement added.

The NLC further announced plans to escalate the strike, directing all affiliates, including those in the private sector, to join the action. Workers already on strike were urged to ignore the governor’s threats and maintain pressure until their demands are met.

“The National Secretariat of the Congress has directed full participation in the strike. We will not relent until the governor complies with the minimum wage law and engages in meaningful negotiations. Further directives will follow in the coming hours,” the statement concluded.

The controversy underscores growing tensions between state governments and labor unions over implementing the revised minimum wage, a critical issue affecting workers nationwide.
