The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has initiated a closed-door meeting in response to the arrest and detention of its President, Joe Ajaero, by Nigerian authorities while he was en route to the UK for a global workers’ conference.
Benson Upah, NLC’s Head of Public Relations, confirmed the situation in an interview, stating that Ajaero was apprehended without a legal warrant, and his current condition and location are unknown.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that earlier, the NLC condemned the arrest, calling it a “brazen act of lawlessness and intimidation,” demanding Ajaero’s immediate and unconditional release.
The Congress also called on the international community, human rights groups, and democracy advocates to pay attention to the increasing authoritarianism in Nigeria.
Ajaero was scheduled to represent Nigerian workers at the UK’s Trade Union Congress, addressing issues such as workers’ rights and economic fairness.
Upah also mentioned that the NLC has put its affiliates, state councils, and civil society allies on high alert, vowing not to be intimidated by oppressive tactics. The outcome of the ongoing closed-door meeting will be announced soon.
