The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has dismissed recent reports alleging the imminent removal of its Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mele Kyari.
Speaking to The Punch on November 15, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, described the speculation as baseless and urged the public to disregard the claims.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the reports suggested that Kyari’s tenure might end before the year’s close due to an alleged organizational shakeup.
In response, Soneye reaffirmed the company’s confidence in Kyari’s leadership, highlighting his pivotal role in driving key transformations since his appointment in 2019.
These include NNPC’s transition to a private limited liability company and efforts to ensure energy security despite global market challenges.
“One might wonder if these sources were involved in hiring Mele Kyari, considering their unfounded claims about his career trajectory. Such baseless speculation is laughable and reflects the lengths some go to create immature narratives,” Soneye stated.
He praised Kyari’s achievements, noting, “Under his leadership, NNPC has transitioned from years of losses to recording profits for the first time in its history. Just yesterday, we achieved a production milestone of 1.8 million barrels per day, underscoring his unwavering commitment to excellence.”
Soneye further emphasized that Kyari remains dedicated to actualizing President Bola Tinubu’s vision for progress in the energy sector and ensuring national energy security.
“To address the rumour: it’s as credible as a mirage in the desert,” he concluded.
NNPC reassured stakeholders that Kyari’s leadership continues to drive unprecedented progress in Nigeria’s energy sector.
