  • Nearly 40% of North Korean troops in Russia’s Kursk region have become casualties in just three months.
  • Around 1,000 North Korean soldiers are believed to have been killed, with many others wounded or missing.
  • Despite heavy losses, North Korean troops continue to support Russian forces in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

Western officials have reported that North Korean troops have suffered nearly 40% casualties in just three months of fighting in Russia’s western Kursk region.

According to the officials, who spoke anonymously, approximately 11,000 North Korean soldiers were deployed from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), and 4,000 of them are now casualties. This includes those killed, wounded, missing, or captured, with around 1,000 believed to have been killed by mid-January.

These heavy losses, if verified, are considered unsustainable for North Korea. It remains unclear where the wounded soldiers are being treated or when and if they will be replaced.

This toll is taking a significant toll on Kim Jong Un’s ally, President Vladimir Putin, as they work together to dislodge Ukrainian forces from Russia, likely in preparation for any future ceasefire talks.

Ukraine launched a swift offensive in the Russian Kursk region last August, catching Russian border guards off guard. While the Kyiv government made it clear it did not intend to hold the territory, instead using it as leverage for future peace talks, they have since been gradually pushed back. The North Korean troops, deployed to reinforce Russian efforts, arrived in October, though Ukraine still controls several hundred square kilometres of Russian territory and continues to inflict substantial losses on its adversaries.

Reports suggest that the North Korean soldiers are from an “elite” unit known as the Storm Corps, but they are reportedly ill-prepared for combat. “These are barely trained troops led by Russian officers they don’t understand,” said Col. Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former British Army tank commander. “They’re cannon fodder in a fight they have little chance of surviving.”

South Korean intelligence reports indicate that these soldiers are vulnerable to Ukrainian First-Person-View (FPV) drones, which have been increasingly used in the southern Donbas region.

Despite these challenges, Ukrainian General Oleksandr Syrskyi has warned that the North Korean forces are still posing a significant challenge. “They are numerous. An additional 11,000-12,000 highly motivated and well-prepared soldiers conducting offensive actions. They rely on Soviet-era tactics and their numbers to operate in platoons and companies,” he told Ukrainian media.
