Nine Northern states in Nigeria are currently experiencing widespread power outages following the latest collapse of the national electricity grid, marking the fourth incident in less than about 8 days.

Kunle Olubiyo, President of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, confirmed this development in a statement released on Monday night.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the power failure has affected states including Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Benue, Katsina, Taraba, Gombe, and parts of Borno and Nasarawa.

This latest incident follows a series of collapses, with the previous one occurring just days prior.

The recurring grid failures have raised serious concerns about the reliability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure. Olubiyo urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the power sector, expressing his frustration over the ongoing issues.

He stated, “The present overwhelming darkness being experienced in about 11 Northern states is nothing but a global embarrassment.”

While the widespread impact has been felt, Nigerian authorities have yet to officially confirm the recent collapse.

However, earlier reports from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Transmission Company of Nigeria indicated that the grid failure on Saturday was caused by the explosion of a current transformer at the Jebba transmission station around 8:15 am.

As the nation continues to face these persistent power supply challenges, the demand for immediate government action to stabilize the electricity grid is growing among stakeholders and citizens alike.
