The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) successfully contained a fire outbreak on a cargo ship at the Lagos Port Complex in Apapa, averting what could have been a major catastrophe.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the fire broke out around 3:00 p.m. on Friday on a vessel transporting compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks, tyres, wooden items, and other highly flammable materials.

In a statement, Ikechukwu Onyemekara, General Manager of Corporate and Strategic Communications at the NPA, said the authority’s Marine Division quickly activated its emergency response protocol after receiving the alert, effectively preventing extensive damage and financial losses.
Firefighting equipment was swiftly deployed by NPA’s fire service unit, while NPA tugboats battled the blaze from the waterside. On land, NPA personnel collaborated with the terminal’s fire crew, the Dangote Group Fire Team, and the Lagos State Fire Service to extinguish the fire.
“We are grateful for the prompt assistance of the Dangote Group Fire Team and the Lagos State Fire Service,” Onyemekara said.
He assured port users and stakeholders that the situation has been fully brought under control and reiterated the NPA’s dedication to maintaining safety standards and enhancing its emergency response capabilities.
