The awareness walk, themed “Say No to Drug Use, Yes to Living,” served as a rallying cry for young people to embrace healthier life choices in the face of rising drug abuse, particularly among urban youth.
“We are here today to speak with one voice — that our future must not be destroyed by the scourge of drugs,” said Dr. Sanwo-Olu while addressing the enthusiastic crowd.
“This walk is not just symbolic; it is a movement to empower our youth with the courage to say no to drugs and yes to their dreams.”
Chants against drug abuse echoed across the campus as participants paraded with colorful banners and placards.
The walk also featured interactive booths, counseling sessions, and educational material aimed at helping students understand the warning signs of drug addiction and the resources available for support.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Umar Iya, NDLEA Commander for Lagos State, highlighted the importance of community engagement in the fight against drug abuse.
“Drug addiction thrives in silence and secrecy. We must shine a light on it through education, intervention, and sustained dialogue,” he noted.
Representing MTN Nigeria, Mr. Femi Adebayo emphasized the role of corporate organizations in supporting public health initiatives.
“Our partnership with the Lagos State Government and the NDLEA is driven by our belief that youth empowerment and public education are critical to national development,” he said.
The event also gave students the opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences. One student, Taiwo Adeyemi, a third-year law undergraduate, expressed her appreciation:
“It’s inspiring to see this level of commitment from our leaders. It reminds us that we’re not alone in this fight.”
In her final remarks, the First Lady encouraged students to become ambassadors of the campaign in their respective communities.
