NSCIA Demands Revocation of Airstrip Licence Granted to Bishop Oyedepo’s Church

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has demanded the immediate revocation of a private airstrip licence granted to Living Faith Church Worldwide, led by Bishop David Oyedepo, citing concerns over potential threats to national peace and security.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a communiqué issued after the 10th meeting of its Expanded General Purpose Committee (EGPC) on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at the National Mosque in Abuja, the Council described the approval as “an aberration of the highest order.”

Although the communiqué did not explicitly mention Bishop Oyedepo, the airstrip licence granted to his church in October has been a controversial topic in public discourse.

The meeting, chaired by the President-General of the NSCIA and Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, was attended by Muslim leaders, government officials, and security representatives.

The communiqué, signed by NSCIA Deputy Secretary-General Prof. Salisu Shehu, stated:

“The Council calls for the immediate revocation of the private airstrip licence approved for a religious leader, describing it as an aberration of the highest order that could threaten the peace and security of the country.”

The NSCIA urged regulatory authorities to exercise caution and diligence when issuing such licences, ensuring they do not jeopardize the nation’s security or unity.

The meeting also addressed broader issues affecting the Muslim Ummah and Nigeria as a whole. While commending efforts by the federal government, traditional rulers, and religious organizations to mitigate communal clashes, the Council highlighted the airstrip licence as a pressing concern and called for decisive action to prevent potential misuse.

The communiqué emphasized the importance of building trust and fostering dialogue to address Nigeria’s challenges. It warned against actions that could create unnecessary tension, stating:

“At a time when what is urgently needed are trust-building, extensive consultation, and genuine dialogue, actions that create unnecessary tension must be avoided.”

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to promoting unity and peace while urging government agencies to prioritize the collective interest of Nigerians over individual pursuits.
