NUC Directs Universities To Reopen Amidst Second Wave Of COVID-19
The National Universities Commission (NUC), on Wednesday, directed all Vice-chancellors of universities to reopen the tertiary institutions from January 18, 2021 as earlier approved by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19.
“Sequel to various enquiries on the full import of the said Circular, I am to confirm and clarify that, while Officers on Grade Level 12 and below remain at home for a period of five weeks, as earlier directed by the Federal Government, schools, including universities, are to re-open on the 18th of January 2021, consistent with the directive of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) team on COVID-19” the NUC said in a letter dated January 6 and addressed to all Vice-chancellors.

The letter also reminded universities to “safeguard lives by strictly adhering to the extant safety protocols and the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) guidelines, which have been communicated severally to the Nigerian University System via NUC’s circular.”
It however warned the universities that under no circumstance should they violate the full cycle of the semester system consistent with the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS).
Eko Hot Blog gathers that the directive is coming just as the NCDC has reported the country’s highest daily tally of fresh COVID-19 infections.
So far, Nigeria has recorded 94, 369 new infections with 77,299 cases discharged and 1,324 COVID-19-related deaths.
