Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has called on the chairmen of the state’s 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas to deliver tangible results to their communities and focus on grassroots development.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Obasa made the remarks on Thursday while addressing chairmen, vice chairmen, council leaders, and majority leaders at a leadership summit organized by the Assembly.

He stressed the importance of mutual respect and collaboration between council chairmen and councillors, describing them as partners in progress.
“Your councillors are your partners. They are not your subjects or subordinates. You must treat them with respect, and they must also respect you,” Obasa said.
He encouraged council executives to engage closely with residents, community leaders, and members of Community Development Areas and Committees to better understand and address local needs.
“If the chairman fails to meet your expectations, you can approach the House of Assembly, and we will resolve it. You can meet me or send me messages. We must learn to work together because that is where our successes lie,” he added.
Obasa criticized the low voter turnout in previous elections and emphasized that council officials must maintain active engagement with their constituents.
“You in the local governments should always be available to the people and maintain constant interaction with them and community leaders. Some people built the party to this stage; now, we must ensure it continues to grow. Let us strengthen the party properly,” he said.

The Speaker also urged council chairmen to implement empowerment programs and infrastructural projects, including parks and sports centres, to foster youth development.
“Use government resources to benefit the people. Let us support our children and the communities around us. Ensure that a park is established within your first year in office and provide sports centres. How many football stars or athletes have emerged from your area?” he asked.
Obasa further announced that the Assembly would organize training seminars for councillors, with council chairmen participating.
The programs, he said, would be led by experts and designed to enhance governance at the grassroots level.
Responding, Chairman of Conference 57 and Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Chairman, Hon. Sesan Olowa, assured that council leaders would collaborate with stakeholders to promote grassroots development.
“We will continue to advance the development of our local councils and do our best for the people,” Olowa said.
