Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has paid heartfelt tribute to the late former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, describing him as a “titan and man of peace” who played a crucial role in securing his release from the harsh imprisonment he endured under General Sani Abacha’s regime.

Speaking at a memorial service for Carter at the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo shared how Carter personally intervened during his detention.

“President Carter was one of my foreign friends who stuck their necks out to save my life,” he said, recalling Carter’s visit to Nigeria to plead directly with Abacha.

Carter’s efforts initially secured Obasanjo’s transfer from prison to house arrest, though this reprieve was short-lived.

Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100, was celebrated for his legacy of humility, humanity, and service. Obasanjo noted that Carter was the only non-African leader to personally meet with Abacha on his behalf. Following Abacha’s death in 1998, Obasanjo was released and later visited Carter in the U.S. to express his gratitude.

Obasanjo also revealed a touching gesture from Ted Turner, founder of CNN, who offered to support him and his family if he sought refuge in the U.S.

“I was moved to tears,” Obasanjo said, underscoring the compassion and generosity that surrounded Carter’s advocacy.

Reflecting on Carter’s life, Obasanjo emphasized his humility, discipline, and commitment to global peace.

“He was a simple, humble, honest man of God… a lover of humanity and a great friend of mine,” he said.

The memorial service highlighted parallels between the two leaders, from their farming backgrounds to their shared military and political experiences.
