President Bola Tinubu’s administration has declared Tuesday, October 1, as a public holiday in celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day anniversary.

In an official statement issued by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, the announcement was made on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The Minister called on Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of past heroes, emphasizing unity as essential for building the Nigeria of their dreams. He encouraged all citizens to remain steadfast in their contributions to national development while wishing everyone a Happy Independence Day.

Earlier, the federal government unveiled the official schedule for the 2024 Independence Day celebration. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, disclosed that the festivities would begin with a World Press Conference on Thursday, September 26, 2024.

Akume, represented by Hadiza Usman, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, inaugurated the Inter-Ministerial Committee responsible for planning and executing the activities to mark the anniversary. Akume further stated that the celebration would be modest, reflecting the current economic challenges facing the nation.

Nigeria gained independence from British rule in 1960 and is set to commemorate its 64th Independence Day on October 1, 2024.
