Flooding caused by the release of water from the Oyan Dam has forced many residents to flee communities along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, including Isheri, Arepo, Lafenwa, and Warewa.

The ongoing flood, which has affected homes and businesses, has left those remaining struggling to cope.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that residents reported that the situation has worsened, with many areas now submerged, making it impossible to drive through certain roads. Ayodeji Alao, a resident, described the ordeal as overwhelming, noting that many families, including children and elderly individuals, have relocated in the past two days.

“There is water everywhere now, and those of us still here are just managing to cope,” Alao said.

Another resident, who chose to remain anonymous, mentioned that those in the lowland areas are the worst affected.

“The water has spread beyond expectations, and those in lowland areas are the hardest hit,” he said.

Many residents are evacuating to avoid emergencies, especially those caring for elderly family members. A resident explained, “People with elderly individuals have moved them out to prevent emergencies from turning into casualties.”

Abayomi Akinde, chairman of Isheri Riverview Estate, provided an update, saying most estates, including Discovery Estate, Airport Estate, Lekki Gardens, and Queens Garden, are heavily flooded, with Queens Garden being the most severely impacted due to its proximity to the water.

Akinde compared the current situation to last year’s flood crisis in the area, fearing a repeat of the disaster.

On October 12, residents noticed a gradual rise in the Ogun River’s current, which eventually overflowed its banks. By October 15, areas around the Long Bridge were also flooded.

The Lagos State government, in collaboration with Ogun State, has warned residents near the Ogun River to prepare for evacuation.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, who inspected the flooded areas, said his administration is treating the situation as an emergency and has requested a survey to identify critical areas for intervention, including plans for an elevated road with proper drainage to mitigate future flooding.
