A student from Obada Idi-Emi High School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area, Ogun State, identified as Ariyo, tragically died after reportedly receiving 162 strokes of the cane from a teacher over a broken dustbin.
The incident, shared on social media by activist Adetoun, revealed that a teacher had instructed students not to damage a newly acquired dustbin placed in their classroom.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that when Ariyo responded jokingly, stating the dustbin was purchased with students’ funds, the remark allegedly angered the teacher. This led to a complaint to the principal, who reportedly instructed the teacher to punish Ariyo.
Following this directive, the teacher allegedly administered 162 lashes with a cane, during which Ariyo collapsed. According to Adetoun, school staff were slow in getting Ariyo to the hospital, and he was declared dead upon arrival.
Confirming the incident, a senior police officer, who was not authorized to speak officially, noted that the event initially caused unrest in the community, which was eventually calmed by police intervention.
The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson has yet to release an official statement on the matter.
