The Ogun State Government has suspended Amzadjo Elijah, a teacher at Obada Grammar School, after a student, Monday Arijo, reportedly died from complications following severe punishment.
Arijo, a Senior Secondary School 2 student, allegedly endured 162 frog jumps and 24 strokes of the cane after commenting that the school used student funds to purchase a dustbin.

In a statement shared on its X page on Sunday, the Ogun State Government confirmed Elijah’s suspension and disclosed that the school principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, who allegedly ordered the punishment, has been issued a formal query.
The statement from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology expressed condolences to Arijo’s family and described him as an exceptional student whose presence will be missed by his peers and school.
The Ministry also revealed that Elijah was immediately detained by authorities, and Mrs. Onaolapo has been given 24 hours to explain her actions and defend her decision to allow corporal punishment, which violates state regulations.
Additionally, the Ministry issued a condolence letter to Arijo’s family, signed by the Permanent Secretary, expressing sympathy for their loss and pledging to pursue justice for the deceased student.
The letter prayed for the family’s strength to bear this irreplaceable loss and for the peaceful repose of Arijo’s soul.
