Opinion: That One Idea
A participant asked the question during a skill development, ‘one idea’ seminar. “I am multi-talented and I want to utilize all my skills, both for personal satisfaction and financial remunerations. However, I am confused on how to combine all of these skills together. How do I build different businesses from them all?”
The trainer gave him a very simple answer, “pick the skill that you believe you are most gifted in. The one which would most generate revenues for you and develop your expertise around it. Let people (clients and customers) know you with that skill and build your brand round it.”
Some people think that doing several things at the same time would bring in more financial revenue for them and make their personal brand more popular but the reverse is often the case. When you are known to have so many skills, especially in dissimilar areas of proficiencies, you will actually confuse would-be clients/customers who would find it very difficult to pinpoint exactly what you do. Often, people patronize vendors whom they believe, know, and recognize as an expert in a core skill.

Entrepreneurs who have scaled higher are well-known in a specific area of expertise, not in several. When you want to develop your brand, pick one area of need, infuse your skill into that area, channel all your energy and resources in it. Let people know you as the go-to person in that field so that you can build credibility and reliability. Credibility would bring you more revenue and a growing personal brand development.
You will build a large number of clientele and have better chances of higher financial remunerations when you show you have mastered the skill in a certain area.

“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life-think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscle, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to succeed, that is the way great spiritual giants are produced.” Swami Vivekananda.
