  • Asisat Oshoala is expected to join the squad later on Thursday.
  • The team is motivated to overcome their past struggles against South Africa and secure their place at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Eko Hot Blog reports that ahead of the much-awaited clash between Nigeria and South Africa for a place at the women’s football event of the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Super Falcons camp opens on Sunday with the Nigeria Football Federation announcing that Asisat Oshoala is not expected until Thursday.

As the Super Falcons commence their preparations for the crucial clash against the Banyana Banyana, Rasheedat Ajibade, the captain and Atletico Madrid forward, is expected to be among the early arrivals, as stated by the NFF media team.

The two teams, widely regarded as the top women’s football squads in Africa, will compete in a two-legged affair for one of the two Olympic tickets from the continent for the Paris 2024 Olympics women’s football tournament.

The first leg will be held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Friday, with the return leg scheduled for the Loftus Versfeld arena in Pretoria five days later.

Super Falcons in training

Ajibade, whose savvy, skill and sapience helped the Falcons to the Round of 16 at last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, will be joined in the roost by home-based goalkeeper Linda Jiwuaku and defender Jumoke Alani, who was drafted in following injury to Saudi Arabia-based Ashleigh Plumptre, as early birds.

Newcomer Shukurat Oladipo, seasoned goalkeeper Tochukwu Oluehi, Chidinma Okeke based in Japan, and forward Gift Monday from Spain are anticipated to arrive early in camp on Monday.

The remainder of the squad is expected to join by Tuesday, with the exception of Asisat Oshoala, the USA-based star, who is set to arrive on Thursday.

South Africa’s delegation, consisting of 24 players, is scheduled to arrive in Abuja this evening.

The Super Falcons are brimming with motivation for this match, fueled by their prolonged inability to defeat the Banyana Banyana in regular time.

Their determination has only intensified after witnessing South Africa claim the Women Africa Cup of Nations trophy in Morocco last year, following a narrow 2-1 defeat to the Banyana in the group stage match.

Nigeria will rely on the bravery of goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, a rearguard expected to include World Cup stars Osinachi Ohale and Michelle Alozie and perhaps returnee Chidinma Okeke and newbie Oladipo, a midfield of no-nonsense duo Halimatu Ayinde and Christy Ucheibe spiced with the nifty Ajibade and the slicky Deborah Abiodun and a fore-line of Esther Okoronkwo and Uchenna Kanu with Gift Monday, Omorinsola Babajide and returnee Chiwendu Ihezuo also available.
