- FIFA’s Decision Pending: The NFF is awaiting FIFA’s ruling on Lesotho’s protest against South Africa for fielding an ineligible player, which could impact Nigeria’s qualification hopes.
- Squad Concerns: Some NFF officials believe certain Super Eagles players have outlived their usefulness and are pushing for squad changes ahead of the next qualifiers in September.
- Playoff Route Still Open: Nigeria must secure a strong second-place finish in Group C to stand a chance of qualifying through the African and global playoffs.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) remains hopeful of securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite the Super Eagles’ challenging position in the qualifiers.

After a crucial 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali last Friday, Nigeria’s hopes were dampened by a disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
The result leaves the Super Eagles fourth in Group C with seven points, trailing leaders South Africa, who have 13 points. Rwanda and Benin Republic are tied on eight points each.

With automatic qualification now highly unlikely, reports suggest that the NFF recently held a strategic meeting with Coach Eric Chelle to explore possible avenues to salvage Nigeria’s qualification bid. A key option includes securing a strong second-place finish in Group C, which could offer a route through the playoffs for a final spot at the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
However, NFF Media Director Ademola Olajire has downplayed speculation of any formal meeting between the federation and Chelle. Speaking to The Guardian yesterday, he stated, “I am not aware of any meeting between the NFF president or any board member with Coach Chelle. However, we are monitoring FIFA’s response to Lesotho’s protest against South Africa for fielding an ineligible player. The outcome of that case could influence the group standings.”
Reports also indicate internal discussions within the NFF regarding the current squad, with concerns that some players may no longer be performing at the required level. Some officials believe squad adjustments are necessary ahead of the next round of qualifiers in September when Nigeria will face Lesotho at home before traveling to Johannesburg to take on South Africa.
