The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced that Nigerian troops, in collaboration with the United States Africa Command, carried out coordinated air strikes that eliminated more than 20 fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the North-East, Eko Hot Blog reports.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, the operation was conducted around the general area of Metele following intelligence reports indicating the movement and regrouping of terrorist elements within the region.

The DHQ explained that the operation formed part of ongoing military efforts aimed at dismantling terrorist networks and denying insurgents operational safe havens across the country.
According to the military, the targeted strikes were launched after surveillance confirmed the presence and convergence of ISIS/ISWAP fighters in the area.
The statement noted that the operation resulted in the elimination of more than 20 terrorists, describing the mission as another major success in the ongoing counter-insurgency campaign in the North-East.
The military further disclosed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, working alongside the United States Africa Command, would continue sustained operations targeted at degrading terrorist capabilities and preventing insurgents from regrouping.

It added that the operations are designed to disrupt terrorist movements, weaken operational structures and remove fighters from the battlefield.
Maj.-Gen. Uba reiterated the commitment of the military to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, insisting that terrorists would not be allowed any safe haven within the country.
“There will be no safe haven for terrorists anywhere in Nigeria,” the statement stressed.
The latest operation comes amid growing counterterrorism cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, following recent reports of another joint operation that reportedly neutralised a senior ISIS-linked commander operating within the region.
