The road medians at certain parts of Douglas Road, Okigwe Road around the Orji axis, and others have become home to foul garbage, serving as “decorations.” Some residents have taken to burning their waste or disposing of it on the roads or in waterways.
The situation has been exacerbated by the fact that since Hon. Mrs. Kate Osigwe, who was in charge of the Road Sweepers, resigned, no one has come to collect the trash.
A portion of the roads around Chukwuma Nwoha, the Orji axis of the Okigwe Road, and Edede by Douglas have become permanent dumpsters.
The neighborhoods of Egbeada, Orlu-Owerri Road, and Human Kingdom Estate have seen garbage piles go for days without being evacuated by the Imo State Waste Management Agency (ISWAMA).
According to Prince Oti, the Chairman of Human Kingdom Estate, residents have had to raise money and hire vehicles to remove the garbage piles within their neighborhood.
In spite of promises made by the former Managing Director of ISWAMA, Barr. Kelechi Emekaraoha, to expand the Agency’s operations to every part of the state, these promises have gone unfulfilled.
The increasing amount of waste has forced residents in the Douglass by Edede area to start relocating, as they have had to shut their doors and windows permanently to avoid the bad smell.
The situation could get worse during rainfalls if not controlled.
