According to Mohammed, the matter was brought to the attention of the zone on June 19 through a petition addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) overseeing the zone.
She stated that the AIG received a complaint regarding a fraudulent vehicle transaction at Ilado Car Stand in the Lokogoma area of Abuja, which was allegedly carried out by the suspect.
“The complainant reported that she saw a Facebook advertisement on June 10 for a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon offered for sale at N32 million, equivalent to $20,000,” she said.
Mohammed further stated that the complainant had reached out to the seller, who is now the suspect, and went on to inspect the vehicle at the specified car stand.
“Upon inspection, she was told that the only fault with the car was its power steering system, which would be fixed within one week.
“Based on this assurance, the complainant paid a deposit of $7,000 with a mutual understanding that the money paid would be returned if she chose not to proceed with the purchase.
“Upon conducting a follow-up inspection with a certified Mercedes-Benz mechanic, significant electrical and mechanical defects were discovered beyond the initially stated issue.
“When she requested a refund, the suspect insisted that no refund would be made unless the car was sold to another buyer,” she narrated.
Mohammed stated that the suspect also failed to give a definite timeline for the payment, which raised concerns about possible fraud.
She explained that after receiving the petition, police detectives from the zone, led by CSP Akinlabi Ogundile, promptly launched an investigation.
The suspect was invited for questioning and, during the investigation, admitted to the crime. A total of $7,000 was recovered from him.
Mohammed added that the zone is intensifying efforts to apprehend the suspect’s accomplice, who is currently on the run.
