Pope Francis, 88, has developed double pneumonia while hospitalized for bronchitis, the Vatican confirmed on Tuesday, though he remains in “good spirits.”

Eko Hot Blog reports that according to a Vatican statement, laboratory tests and a chest X-ray revealed a “complex picture” involving a polymicrobial infection, bronchiectasis, and asthmatic bronchitis.

The pontiff, admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital last Friday, required adjustments to his treatment, including cortisone and antibiotics.

A CT scan conducted Tuesday afternoon confirmed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, requiring additional medication. The Vatican emphasized that despite these complications, the Pope is resting, praying, and reading.

Pope Francis, who had part of his right lung removed at age 21 due to pleurisy, has faced a series of health challenges in recent years. He has undergone hernia and colon surgeries since 2021 and uses a wheelchair due to chronic knee pain.

The Vatican has already canceled papal audiences and announced he will not attend mass this Sunday. However, it has yet to confirm his participation in the weekly Angelus prayer.

Pilgrims Gather in Prayer

Supporters worldwide have expressed concern, with many gathering at Saint Peter’s Square and outside Gemelli hospital to pray for his recovery.

“I hope that he’s getting better soon,” said Birgit Jungreuthmayer, a tourist from Austria. Others lit candles or left handwritten messages of encouragement.

The Vatican also published children’s drawings and letters sent to Francis from hospital patients and their families. The Pope has expressed gratitude for the public’s support and has asked for continued prayers.

Active Despite Health Concerns

Despite his ailments, Francis remains an active leader. In September 2024, he completed an extensive four-nation tour, the longest of his papacy.

While he has acknowledged the possibility of resignation due to health, he has stated that he currently sees no reason to step down, emphasizing, “I carry on.”
