The Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has urged Nigerians to dismiss claims discrediting the operational status of the Port Harcourt Refinery.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, denounced reports accusing the company of blending Crack C5 from Indorama Company with Naphtha to sell as refined premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as petrol.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Soneye described the allegations as baseless, clarifying that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery is functioning efficiently. “The refinery is currently operating at 70% of its installed capacity, with plans to increase production to 90%,” the statement read.

He also addressed the misunderstanding surrounding technical terms such as “blending” and “refining,” explaining that PMS is not a single product but a blend of various refinery outputs designed to meet consumer needs.

“Blending and refining are integral and sophisticated components of modern fuel production. PMS is meticulously crafted by blending multiple refinery outputs and other middle distillates to ensure value and usability. Nigerians should not be swayed by individuals misusing technical terms to spread misinformation or hinder progress,” Soneye said.

NNPCL reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and excellence, urging the public to support its efforts to bolster Nigeria’s energy sector.

This clarification follows growing speculation and misinformation aimed at undermining the refinery’s progress and the company’s ongoing contributions to the nation’s petroleum industry.
