Gombe incident dismissed as normal political differences.
The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has stated that the issue of who will be President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election is premature and not under consideration at this time.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Basiru made this known during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, where he affirmed the party’s overwhelming support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid. He explained that while Tinubu has received broad endorsements from APC stakeholders, decisions on his running mate will only be addressed after the party’s convention, typically held about a year before the general elections.
“As far as we are concerned, the national summit held at the Presidential Villa has endorsed Mr President based on his track record. A large spectrum of stakeholders in our party have also overwhelmingly given their support,” Basiru said.
He clarified that no official position had been taken regarding Vice President Kashim Shettima and that no adverse decision had been made concerning his role.
Reacting to the controversy that trailed the APC Northeast stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe on June 15—where Tinubu was endorsed without mention of Shettima—Basiru dismissed the incident as inconsequential.
“I was physically present in Gombe. It’s normal in a democracy for people to hold differing views,” he said.
He added that while some stakeholders felt only Tinubu should be endorsed, others expected Shettima, a Northeasterner, to be recognised as well. However, he maintained that the final decision on a running mate lies with the presidential candidate after the convention.

Basiru emphasized that the national leadership of the APC has not taken any position on North-East politics and urged party members to remain focused on unity and due process.
